- 1 pound ground beef
- 8 ounces mushrooms, finely chopped
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 medium carrots, diced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 baking dish.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté onions and carrots for 5 minutes. Add garlic, then mushrooms, and cook until browned.
- Add ground beef and cook until fully browned. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, pepper, and beef broth. Simmer for 5-7 minutes. Add peas and stir.
- Pour filling into the baking dish and spread evenly.
- Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper.
- Spoon mashed potatoes over filling. Create peaks with a fork and top with cheese if using.
- Bake for 25 minutes. Broil for 2-3 minutes for a golden crust. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Brown mushrooms separately for extra flavor.
- Warm the milk before adding to the potatoes for better absorption.
- Let the pie rest before serving to allow it to set properly.
