Description

Brown Gravy is a rich, savory sauce made from pan drippings, broth, and seasonings — perfect for pouring over mashed potatoes, meatloaf, roast beef, or any comforting dish needing a flavorful boost.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns golden brown (this forms a roux).
  3. Gradually whisk in the beef broth to avoid lumps.
  4. Add Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder.
  5. Continue to cook, whisking frequently, for about 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use pan drippings from roast beef or steak for extra flavor.
  • For a richer gravy, stir in a tablespoon of heavy cream or a splash of red wine.
  • If too thick, thin with a bit more broth; if too thin, simmer a bit longer.
