Description
Brown Gravy is a rich, savory sauce made from pan drippings, broth, and seasonings — perfect for pouring over mashed potatoes, meatloaf, roast beef, or any comforting dish needing a flavorful boost.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns golden brown (this forms a roux).
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth to avoid lumps.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder.
- Continue to cook, whisking frequently, for about 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm.
Notes
- Use pan drippings from roast beef or steak for extra flavor.
- For a richer gravy, stir in a tablespoon of heavy cream or a splash of red wine.
- If too thick, thin with a bit more broth; if too thin, simmer a bit longer.
