  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch cake pan generously.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/4 cup butter with the brown sugar. Stir until bubbly and dissolved. Pour into the prepared cake pan.
  3. Arrange apple slices over the caramel layer in the pan. Set aside.
  4. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat remaining 1/4 cup butter with granulated sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
  6. Alternate adding dry mixture and milk to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined.
  7. Pour batter evenly over the apples in the pan.
  8. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Let cool 10–15 minutes before flipping onto a plate. Tap gently if needed to release.
  10. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.
