A rich, golden cake topped with glossy caramelized apples. This comforting upside-down dessert is full of cozy spices, tender fruit, and buttery flavor — perfect for fall or any sweet craving.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 medium apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch cake pan generously.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/4 cup butter with the brown sugar. Stir until bubbly and dissolved. Pour into the prepared cake pan.
- Arrange apple slices over the caramel layer in the pan. Set aside.
- In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat remaining 1/4 cup butter with granulated sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
- Alternate adding dry mixture and milk to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined.
- Pour batter evenly over the apples in the pan.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cool 10–15 minutes before flipping onto a plate. Tap gently if needed to release.
- Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Use tart, firm apples like Granny Smith for best texture.
- Grease pan thoroughly to prevent sticking during flipping.
- Letting the cake sit after baking helps set the caramel.
- Serve with ice cream or whipped cream for an extra treat.
