Description

A cozy, comforting bake layered with creamy mashed potatoes, caramelised onions, juicy sausages, and bubbling cheddar cheese. Perfect for chilly nights and hearty appetites.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 kg potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 6 large pork sausages
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups beef stock
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease your baking dish.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Boil potatoes until tender, then mash with warm milk and butter. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Brown sausages in a skillet with olive oil, then slice and set aside. In the same pan, caramelise onions slowly for 20–25 minutes. Stir in flour, then add beef stock and simmer until thickened.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Layer sausage slices and onion gravy into the baking dish, spread mashed potatoes on top, and sprinkle with shredded cheese.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Bake for 25–30 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
  6. Finishing Touches: Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Dish out generous portions and savor every layer of comforting goodness.

Notes

  • Use starchy potatoes like Russets for fluffier mash.
  • Take your time caramelising the onions for maximum sweetness.
  • Add mustard or Worcestershire sauce to the gravy for extra depth.
  • Warm milk and butter before adding to the mash for best texture.
