Description

A rich and comforting baked orzo dish inspired by French onion flavors, featuring caramelized onions, creamy sauce, and a golden cheesy topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup orzo pasta
  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C.
  2. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium low heat and cook sliced onions until deeply caramelized.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook briefly until fragrant.
  4. Stir in orzo, beef broth, and heavy cream, mixing well.
  5. Transfer mixture into a greased baking dish.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes until orzo is tender and most liquid is absorbed.
  7. Top with mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
  8. Return to oven and bake until cheese is melted and golden.
  9. Let rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Cook onions slowly for best flavor development
  • Use freshly grated cheese for better melting
  • Add a splash of broth when reheating leftovers to keep it creamy
