Description
These Chinese take-out donuts are golden on the outside, soft and fluffy in the middle, and finished with a simple sweet glaze. They are easy to make with pantry staples and taste best served warm.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- About 3 cups vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pot or Dutch oven to 350°F.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and melted unsalted butter.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
- Scoop small portions of dough and shape them into small balls or rustic donut shapes.
- Carefully lower the dough pieces into the hot oil in small batches.
- Fry for 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a cooling rack or paper towel lined plate.
- Serve warm with your favorite sweet finish, such as a light honey glaze or a sprinkle of sugar.
Notes
- Keep the oil temperature steady at 350°F for the best texture.
- Do not overcrowd the pot, or the donuts may cook unevenly.
- These donuts taste best fresh, but they can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough.
