Description
Crispy Hungarian Potato Cheese Sticks are savory, golden-brown baked or fried treats made with mashed potatoes, cheese, and flour. They’re crunchy on the outside and soft and cheesy on the inside, perfect as a snack or appetizer.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups mashed potatoes (cooled)
- 1 cup shredded cheese (Emmental, cheddar, or any melting cheese)
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (plus extra for rolling)
- 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)
- Breadcrumbs for coating
- Oil for frying or baking spray for oven method
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine mashed potatoes, shredded cheese, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and flour until a soft, non-sticky dough forms.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Cut into sticks (about 3-inch long and 1/2-inch wide).
- Roll each stick in breadcrumbs to coat evenly.
- Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry sticks until golden and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per side. Alternatively, place on a baking tray, spray with oil, and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Drain on paper towels and serve warm with a dip of your choice.
Notes
- Use leftover mashed potatoes to make this snack even quicker.
- You can spice up the flavor by adding herbs like chives or dill to the dough.
- For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs.
