Description

A rich and hearty breakfast casserole featuring all the classic components of a Croque Madame — ham, Gruyère, bread, creamy béchamel, and a crispy, bubbly top — perfect for serving a crowd!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 thick slices white bread, cut into cubes
  • 1 1/2 cups diced ham
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a casserole dish.
  2. Arrange bread cubes, diced ham, and shredded Gruyère in casserole.
  3. Whisk together eggs, milk, mustard, salt, and pepper in a bowl and pour evenly over the casserole.
  4. For béchamel, melt butter in a saucepan, add flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually add 1 cup milk and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  5. Pour béchamel sauce evenly over casserole.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes until set and bubbly on top.
  7. Remove from oven, let rest 10 minutes, then serve warm.

Notes

  • Pair with a green salad or fruit for a complete brunch.
