Description
A golden, flaky puff pastry plait filled with sweet caramelized red onions and tangy feta cheese. Perfect for brunch, lunch, or a cozy dinner, this savory bake brings together simple ingredients in a beautifully braided presentation.
Ingredients
- Puff Pastry Sheet: 1 large sheet (approx. 320g)
- Red Onions: 2 medium, thinly sliced
- Feta Cheese: 200g, crumbled
- Olive Oil: 2 tablespoons
- Fresh Thyme: 1 tablespoon, chopped
- Egg Yolk: 1, beaten with 1 teaspoon of milk
- Black Sesame Seeds: 1 teaspoon (optional)
- Salt and Pepper: To taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced red onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for 15-20 minutes until caramelized. Stir in thyme and let cool slightly.
- Unroll puff pastry onto a floured surface or parchment paper. Lightly mark the center third lengthwise.
- Spread the onion mixture down the center and top with crumbled feta. Cut diagonal strips on each side and fold over in a braid pattern.
- Transfer to baking sheet. Brush top with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds if using.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
- Let rest for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Use cold pastry to ensure a flakier crust.
- Do not overfill the center to prevent bursting during baking.
- Try adding chopped spinach or sun-dried tomatoes for variation.
- Reheat leftovers in oven to revive crispiness.
