Description

Classic old fashioned donuts with a crisp, craggy exterior and a soft, cakey interior, finished with a sweet vanilla glaze for the perfect nostalgic treat.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg yolks and beat until smooth. Mix in sour cream.
  3. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until a dough forms. Cover and chill for 1 hour.
  4. Roll out dough to about 1/2-inch thickness and cut with a donut cutter.
  5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 325°F (165°C). Fry donuts in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  6. Drain on paper towels.
  7. For glaze, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Dip warm donuts into the glaze and let set on a wire rack.

  • Use a thermometer to keep oil at a consistent temperature for even frying.
  • Donuts taste best fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.
  • You can flavor the glaze with lemon, maple, or almond extract for variation.
