Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
- In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg yolks and beat until smooth. Mix in sour cream.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until a dough forms. Cover and chill for 1 hour.
- Roll out dough to about 1/2-inch thickness and cut with a donut cutter.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 325°F (165°C). Fry donuts in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
- Drain on paper towels.
- For glaze, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Dip warm donuts into the glaze and let set on a wire rack.
Notes
- Use a thermometer to keep oil at a consistent temperature for even frying.
- Donuts taste best fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.
- You can flavor the glaze with lemon, maple, or almond extract for variation.
