- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for dough)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon red or pink food coloring
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add granulated sugar, melted butter, eggs, food coloring, and salt. Mix well.
- Gradually add flour and cocoa powder, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread softened butter over the surface.
- Mix brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle evenly over the buttered dough.
- Roll tightly into a log and slice into 12 rolls. Arrange in prepared baking dish and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Bake for 22 to 25 minutes until lightly golden and cooked through.
- Beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Spread glaze over warm rolls before serving.
Notes
- Make sure milk is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast.
- Do not overbake to keep the centers soft and fluffy.
- For make ahead, assemble rolls and refrigerate overnight before baking.
