- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
- Place a large skillet over medium heat and allow it to warm up.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, half of the chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix just until combined.
- Form the mixture into oval patties.
- Add olive oil to the skillet and place the patties in the pan. Sear for 4 to 5 minutes per side until browned. Remove the patties and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter and cook the remaining chopped onion with the sliced mushrooms until softened.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onion and mushroom mixture and stir well.
- Slowly whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and Dijon mustard until the gravy is smooth.
- Return the patties to the skillet and simmer for about 10 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
- Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
- Serve hot with plenty of gravy spooned over the top.
Notes
- Do not overmix the beef mixture or the patties may turn out dense.
- Let the patties sear well before flipping to build deeper flavor.
- If the gravy gets too thick, add a small splash of beef broth to loosen it.
- This dish is especially good served with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
