Description

Tender Salisbury steak patties are simmered in a rich brown gravy with onions and mushrooms for a cozy, satisfying dinner that tastes like pure comfort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Place a large skillet over medium heat and allow it to warm up.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, half of the chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix just until combined.
  3. Form the mixture into oval patties.
  4. Add olive oil to the skillet and place the patties in the pan. Sear for 4 to 5 minutes per side until browned. Remove the patties and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt the butter and cook the remaining chopped onion with the sliced mushrooms until softened.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the onion and mushroom mixture and stir well.
  7. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and Dijon mustard until the gravy is smooth.
  8. Return the patties to the skillet and simmer for about 10 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  9. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
  10. Serve hot with plenty of gravy spooned over the top.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the beef mixture or the patties may turn out dense.
  • Let the patties sear well before flipping to build deeper flavor.
  • If the gravy gets too thick, add a small splash of beef broth to loosen it.
  • This dish is especially good served with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
