Description

Southern Chocolate Cobbler is a rich and gooey dessert featuring a soft cake-like top with a fudgy chocolate sauce beneath. This classic Southern treat is incredibly easy to make and perfect for serving warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for topping)
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place butter in a 9×13 inch baking dish and melt it in the oven while preheating.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, and 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Stir in milk and vanilla to form a thick batter.
  3. Remove baking dish with melted butter and pour the batter evenly over the butter — do not stir.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and remaining 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the pan — again, do not stir.
  5. Carefully pour boiling water over the top of the entire dish — do not mix.
  6. Bake for 35–40 minutes or until the top looks set and firm. A gooey chocolate sauce will form underneath.
  7. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • Don’t stir after adding each layer — that’s the secret to the sauce forming underneath.
  • Use high-quality cocoa powder for the best chocolate flavor.
  • This dessert is best served warm but can be reheated in the microwave.
