Description
Southern Chocolate Cobbler is a rich and gooey dessert featuring a soft cake-like top with a fudgy chocolate sauce beneath. This classic Southern treat is incredibly easy to make and perfect for serving warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for topping)
- 1 1/2 cups boiling water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place butter in a 9×13 inch baking dish and melt it in the oven while preheating.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, and 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Stir in milk and vanilla to form a thick batter.
- Remove baking dish with melted butter and pour the batter evenly over the butter — do not stir.
- In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and remaining 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the pan — again, do not stir.
- Carefully pour boiling water over the top of the entire dish — do not mix.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes or until the top looks set and firm. A gooey chocolate sauce will form underneath.
- Let sit for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream if desired.
Notes
- Don’t stir after adding each layer — that’s the secret to the sauce forming underneath.
- Use high-quality cocoa powder for the best chocolate flavor.
- This dessert is best served warm but can be reheated in the microwave.
