Description

Flaky golden puff pastry turnovers filled with warm cinnamon apples and an optional sweet cream cheese layer, finished with a simple vanilla glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed but still cold
  • 3 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar, for the cream filling
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar, for the glaze
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, divided
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, combine diced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt.
  3. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often, until the apples soften.
  4. Mix cornstarch and water in a small bowl, then stir it into the apple mixture.
  5. Cook for 1 minute until thickened, then remove from heat and cool completely.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix cream cheese, 3 tablespoons powdered sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth.
  7. Cut the puff pastry into 8 squares.
  8. Add a spoonful of cream filling to each square if using, then top with apple filling.
  9. Fold each square into a triangle and press the edges firmly with a fork.
  10. Brush the tops with beaten egg and cut a small slit in each turnover.
  11. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.
  12. Mix 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1 to 2 tablespoons milk, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth.
  13. Drizzle the glaze over slightly cooled turnovers and serve.

Notes

  • Keep puff pastry cold for the flakiest texture.
  • Cool the apple filling before assembling to prevent soggy pastry.
  • Skip the cream filling for a classic apple-only version.
  • Reheat leftovers in the oven for the best crisp texture.
